Howdy! I saw the Star Wars movie today courtesy of United Airlines.. and I suppose by now the whole world knows what happened to Hans Solo. Let's just say he did not have a terrific day. The movie seemed tired and filled with fan demanded clichés. I remember the freshness of the 1977 version when George Lucas' special effects were a novelty.
I'm sitting on the plane, United Flight 895, and I'm thinking about being older. I'll not reveal my age at the moment but let's look at a group of well known people whose names we see almost everyday.. people who are pushing some big numbers: Mick Jagger (72), Harrison Ford (74), Arnie Schwarzenegger (68), Bernie Sanders (74), Jerry Brown (78), Sylvester Stallone (69), and Hillary Clinton (69). These guys still can fire up the crowds and draw a box office. In their line of work they seem pretty competent if their payday is somewhat correlated with their productivity. Do these actors and politicians give any indications that they might retire soon?
In a few hours I will be on a Singapore Air flight from Singapore to Katmandu, the last leg of a 40 hour trip halfway around the world.
Stay tuned for more.

political economy #1
Aloha, I haven't been able to visit with you for awhile. Have you ever watched Randall's Honey Badger? Well I recently discovered Randall and think his work is raising awareness of the plight of many endangered species and may help save some of them. Although the Honey Badger seems to be able to take care of himself. Interestingly, during the debates and partial resolution of the "fiscal cliff" situation it occured to me that a great mascot for Congressional Republicans would be .. the Honey Badger. As Randall says, "look HB is in a bee house, eating larva, being stung 1000's of times by bees. Honey Badger Dont Care! Well the larva could be the lobbyist dollars and the bees the angry constituents. Watch the video and wonder if a diet of Cobra (house ethics panel?) could be advantageous.
Ever wonder why we have the second amendment? Hey we need guns in case the Brits invade us or Bambi is in our back yard. We have to be able to organize a militia for self defence. Wait.... we have an army, navy, and airforce, and they have some formidable weapons... they can do the job.. Perhaps we really should get rid of any weapon that can fire on automatic. Back at our ranch we only use single shot weapons to control rabid skunks and wild predatory dogs.
Bye now!
